24: Redemption Captured In Africa Photography Exhibit

Here's a little more information regarding the upcoming photography exhibit I mentioned in a previous post:

An Exhibit of Photography by:
Jon Cassar
Rodney Charters
Michael Klick
Kelsey McNeal
Kiefer Sutherland

November 12, 2008, to January 11, 2009 in the Bell Family Gallery in Los Angeles

24: REDEMPTION: Captured in Africa offers a rare inside look at the making of the show composed of candid moments between cast and crew, including Emmy Award-winner Kiefer Sutherland; dramatic stills from the spectacular action sequences; and vivid photographic captures of the scenic South African locations.

Curated by Entertainment Weekly deputy photo director Michael Kochman and custom printed at DigitalFusion's fine art printing facility, the exhibit features works by executive producer/director Jon Cassar, director of photography Rodney Charters, producer Michael Klick, unit photographer Kelsey McNeal, and star/executive producer Kiefer Sutherland.

"I was so impressed with the quality of the photography, and it was exciting to see a production photographed from five different perspectives," said Kochman. "Each photographer captured something very special and poetic--sometimes intimate, sometimes epic, sometimes documentary-like and raw. It all adds up to a fascinating photographic experience."

"Shooting 24: 'Redemption' in South Africa was the highlight of my six years on the show," said 24 executive producer and Emmy Award-winning director Jon Cassar. "It was nothing short of exhilarating. Africa also became a wonderful canvas for the still photography enthusiasts among our crew.

Every day put us in places and situations that were new and exciting to us, and our cameras clicked constantly. This exhibit chronicles the seven weeks that were spent in Cape Town and the surrounding regions from moments captured during a hectic shooting schedule to the faces and places that represent not only the making of 24 but the Africa of today."

Extra TV filmed some behind-the-scenes footage of the making of "24: Redemption". It shows some interesting footage of the filming of some of the action scenes and at the end a shot of Kiefer and several of the South African kids in the movie getting some promo shots taken.

Joe Buck's "24: Redemption" Review

Sports fans would recognize Joe Buck from his play-by-play work on NFL and Major League Baseball games. Right now he's working the World Series and during Game 3 this past Saturday, he gave a brief review of "24: Redemption" after a short promo during the game.

Joe Buck is also a "24" fan and he stated he got an advance copy of the movie and said it was "outstanding" and "24 fans won't be disappointed." He does work for FOX and the World Series is on FOX, but I thought it was an interesting tidbit that I wanted to pass along for those "24" fans who may not be watching the Series.

I'm also posting this because frankly, there's not much "24" news out there right now so I'll take what I can get!

"24: Redemption" Soundtrack From Sean Callery

Music from the "24: Redemption" movie composed by Sean Callery will be released on 11/18/08.

Here is the information from the Varèse Sarabande website:

24: REDEMPTION - Original Television Soundtrack

Music Composed by Sean Callery

The pulse-pounding countdown gets a jumpstart as 24: REDEMPTION, the unprecedented feature-length event from television's most provocative and suspenseful series, arrives on DVD November 25th from Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment, the Tuesday immediately following the network television premiere.

24: Redemption bridges the gap between Seasons 6 and 7, and is the first new material from 24 producers in over a year-and-a-half. The two-hour broadcast special will premiere Sunday, November 23rd on FOX.

Audiences last saw Jack Bauer (Kiefer Sutherland) literally standing on the precipice of a mountain cliff grappling with the reality that for all his heroics, he'd once more lost the woman he loved. 24: Redemption catches up with Bauer four years later, on the African continent, where he has sought solace in missionary work.

As the action unfolds on the day of the U.S. Presidential Inauguration, he finds himself in the midst of a bloody uprising in the small fictitious African nation of Sangala, where a ruthless dictator is drafting innocent children as soldiers in his army. As the vicious warlord descends on an orphanage in search of recruits, Jack enters into a one-man crusade at the behest of a friend to rescue the children and get them to safety.

Sean Callery returns to provide his most exotic and exhilarating score — the first time his music for 24 has been presented in the form of a single self-contained work.

Q & A With Kiefer Sutherland About "Redemption"

1. The movie shot in different locations. What was that experience like?

It was like a big field trip -- we all went to South Africa and Washington, so from that perspective it was just amazing. And the people that we met in Africa, specifically the actors, that was really the look of Africa that we got ... so that was really exciting. It was just one of those projects where all of the things lined up right, and arguably I would say it's one, if not the best, thing that we've done on '24' to date.

2. Did filming the movie feel different than shooting the series?

It was unbelievably different, because it had an end. It's the only thing that we've done that actually had a conclusion. So from the writers' perspective, it was so freeing ... instead of having to write into this kind of endless vaccuum, which any television show really can become, if it's serialized.

3. Why did the movie name change from 'Exile' to 'Redemption'?

I don't know. It's interesting. The beginning of the film is really dealing with Jack Bauer's exile, and the end of the film is really dealing with his own redemption, and I think we called it 'Exile' in haste. And in the way it connects into season 7, 'Redemption' was just a much better title.

4. There's a new president on '24,' played by Cherry Jones. Is she a Hillary or a Sarah Palin?

She's definitely not a Sarah Palin. Uh, no. It's very funny -- we were supposed to have come out a year ago, and I would have loved to have seen the influence of having Cherry Jones play a President in the middle of [the Democratic] primary. It creates conversation, and that's our job. But what I love about the way she's playing this character is she's got unbelievable strength, and she approaches her presidency very differently, and I would say maybe with a little more common sense, as opposed to politicizing to appease one group or another.

5. How has it been working with Carlos Bernard [Tony] again?

Carlos is one of my best friends. It was fantastic to have him back, and I think the writers did a really clever job in how they brought him back, because at first it was something that we were all incredibly nervous about. When they tell you about the idea, you say, "No, you can't do that," then they go, "Well, read it and tell us what you think." And I think it was very clever.

Jack Bauer In Japan

Kiefer Sutherland did a series of commercials in Japan portraying Jack Bauer (of course!) for a product called Calorie Mate. It is fun to see Kiefer having fun with the Jack Bauer character in these commercials. Here are two of my favorite ones:

More "24: Redemption" Reviews

"24" Lead Director, Jon Cassar has his own website that he updates from time to time regarding the show. His most recent update on October 5th had an entry regarding the upcoming movie:

"REDEMPTION is finished and just this week was screened for the foreign and local press. Their initial reaction has been great. They have been saying things like:

"The most moving '24' episodes we have ever seen."

"Allowed Kiefer to go to emotional places with the character that we've never seen him go before, and with great success."

"The subject matter is so important- the problem of child soldiers has not been given the coverage it deserves by American news media. Bravo to Fox for sparking a discussion of it through this global entertainment."

"24 is back."

"The production values were extraordinary. It looked and played like a feature film. In fact, it was better than most feature films."

Great to see more positive reviews!

Kiefer Sutherland On "24": "The Best Is Yet To Come"

Kiefer Sutherland On 24: 'The Best Is Yet To Come'
The actor dishes on the new season of the hit show to Entertainmentwise...

Kiefer Sutherland assures us that he has no intention of quitting hit real-time drama 24 any time soon, despite seven long years (or should that be days?) of protecting the president. In an exclusive interview with Entertainmentwise, Kiefer - who plays tireless CTU agent Jack Bauer - insists he has left any initial doubts he had about revisiting the character year upon year far behind.

He says, “One of the great fears that I had is you sign a contract, it used to be minimum of five years and then it became a minimum of seven.“You start thinking 'OK, I’m 33 years old and I won’t be finished with this until I’m 40'.

“So I’m sitting there thinking, ‘what’s it going to be like to have to play the same character over that long a period of time?’“It wasn’t until the second or third year that I thought to myself ‘what an arrogant thing to say...because it’s not the same character – every year informs the next year.

"When I first started playing him he had a wife and a daughter, by the time I started playing him the next year, the character had changed, just like a human being changes over time."

And the former brat packer is confident that the upcoming season of the hit show will be the best so far, despite having to work around last year's writers' strike.“Disappointing as the writer’s strike was, it allowed us to make what I believe is the best season of 24 we’ve ever made, which I’m very excited about," he says.

Be sure you check back for our full interview with Kiefer, coming soon.

Jack Bauer Tribute Video

"24" Theatrical Movie Probably 2 Years Away

There has been a great deal of speculation as to when and if there will be a "24" movie released in the theatres. At first it was thought it may be shot and released in between seasons, then the talk was that it will be made after the TV series is finished.

The latter has been pretty much confirmed by Kiefer Sutherland according to this recent quote (from The Sun UK):

"The actor — who plays Jack Bauer in the series — said: “It is hard enough to write it. So we all agreed that for the writers and their sanity, we wouldn’t approach doing a film without them, so we would wait until the show is finished. “And then we would do a film. I think it’s a couple of years off.”

This isn't really a surprise and it makes sense given the heavy demands on the writers for this type of program. This is the first I have seen Kiefer actually confirm what was pretty much expected regarding the movie.
