Lou Diamond Phillips Talks About His Friend Kiefer Sutherland

You’ve worked with Kiefer Sutherland, you guys still buds? Keep in touch etc?

LDP: I absolutely adore Kiefer. Not only a great actor but one of the coolest people you’ll ever meet with an absolute heart of gold.  Having said that, I saw him two months ago and he mooned me through a lobby window at the Chateau Marmont.  Given our history together, I had no choice but to moon him back.  Drinks ensued.  This is the nature of our relationship.  I’d crawl through broken glass to work with him again.

Rob writes: “What was it like to work with Kiefer Sutherland again on season 1 of 24 after doing the Young Guns movies? Would you like the opportunity to work with him again?”

LDP: Little bit of an overlap from the last question but I’ll elaborate by pointing out that Kiefer and I have worked on five projects together – Young Guns 1 & 2, Renegades, Picking Up the Pieces (With Woody Allen & Sharon Stone.  I hear it’s terrible. I’ve never seen it.) and of course those two eps of 24 in Season 1.  I got a call from my agent who informed me they were offering me the role but the script wasn’t written yet.  I was told it would be me, Kiefer and Dennis Hopper in a bunker.  Sounded like a party to me so I told them I needed to make one call.  I called Kiefer on set (he was unaware of the offer) and he told me to say yes immediately.  Obviously, I did.  He mentioned a project to me in passing the last time I saw him so I have hopes that we’ll be back in the saddle again.  He is still one of my favorite people in the biz.  Also, just as an added note, don’t remember the season or the ep but Kiefer/Jack Bauer saved my daughter Grace from nerve gas in a mall not too long ago.  It was her first professional gig.

Emmy Flashback: Kiefer Sutherland's Win In 2006

Given that the Primetime Emmy's have just aired, I thought this would be a good time to remember Kiefer Sutherland's win for Lead Actor in a Drama Series in 2006. It was an awesome night for Kiefer and '24' as they won several Emmy's that night including Best Drama Series for Season 5.

Enjoy re-living Kiefer's win again!

Possible Audrey Return For The '24' Movie?

In a recent interview in USA Today, Kim Raver (Audrey Raines, 24) was asked about her possible return for the upcoming '24' movie:

Would Raver appear in the projected 24 movie if asked? "Never say never on 24," she says. "Audrey's not dead. She's just in bed somewhere."

As a fan of the Audrey character, I would love to see her appear in the 24 movie!- 24FanForever

Callery has been nominated for every season of the show and 24: Redemption. How about releasing another 24 soundtrack now, FOX?

24 nabbed another Emmy win for Outstanding Sound Editing For A Series for Day 8 4:00 AM – 5:00 AM (episode 13). The following people share the credit:

William D. Dotson, Supervising Sound Editor
Catherine M. Speakman, Supervising ADR/DX Editor

Jeffrey Whitcher, Sound Editor
Shawn Kennelly, Sound Editor
Daryl Fontenault, Sound Editor

Much like Callery, the sound editing team are also repeat winners at the Emmys having previously won for Day 3: 12:00am-1:00am, Day 6: 10:00pm-11:00pm, and 24: Redemption. They were also nominated for Day 5: 9:00pm-10:00pm and Day 7: 10:00pm-11:00pm.

As for the other three nominations this year? Gregory Itzin lost out to Dexter‘s John Lithgow for Outstanding Guest Actor In A Drama Series, best stunt coordination went to ABC’s short-lived FlashForward, and best sound mixing went to FOX’s Glee

The series has racked up an impressive 68 Emmy nominations during its run with 21 wins. As former 24 director Jon Cassar noted on his Twitter, the series has won at least one Emmy for every season it was on air.

Former '24' Star, Kim Raver Starring In Upcoming Fact Based Film

A wife and mother (Kim Raver) is forced to bury her husband and then try to uncover the details of his death in Lifetime's "Bond of Silence."

Quest for justice: Lifetime movie pits star Raver against 'Bond of Silence'

It's the essence of what is known as "a Lifetime movie": a woman facing incredible odds to ensure justice is done. That framework has serviced numerous dramas and actresses, and it does so again as Lifetime debuts the fact-based film "Bond of Silence" Monday, Aug. 23.

The name of the real person played by Kim Raver is Katy Hutchison, but her movie alter ego is Katy McIntosh, suddenly widowed one New Year's Eve when her attorney husband (David Cubitt) is killed while dealing with a nearby teen party that has gotten out of hand. As she tries to determine the exact circumstances that led to her spouse's death, Katy is stonewalled not only by the youths who are unified in their silence but by their very protective parents. Charlie McDermott plays a teenager who has a direct role in the tragedy, and Greg Grunberg portrays a police detective trying to help the driven Katy get to the truth. Jacob Hoppenbrouwer and Ruby Curtis play the McIntoshes' young twins.

Raver appreciated Hutchison's visit while "Bond of Silence" was in production, but for creative reasons, she's also glad that presence wasn't constant.

"Katy helped us to a point, so that we could really tell the story," Raver says. "She was very available to me when I needed it, but when you're dealing with someone's life, you also want to pick the moments where (such firsthand contact) is appropriate.

"I thought it would be easier to have the real person there, but it actually posed some challenging things that we had to sort of work through. What may have happened at times in her real life may not have been the best way to tell the story. The experience she went through happened over several years, and we found that was going to be difficult to do dramatically, so we had to condense the time."

Grunberg also had a considerable task in melding the traits of several investigators into a composite character for the movie's purposes. "He's an amalgamation of five detectives who worked on the case," the amiable actor explains, "but a lot of the investigating was done by this very persistent woman who lost her husband and refused to live by this unethical social rule that was set up. In the movie, she's constantly on my character not to settle and to find the answers."

While they had no intention of diminishing the story they were telling, Raver and Grunberg found the need to let off some steam on the "Bond of Silence" set in British Columbia, where the real Katy lives.

"We were able to have a ton of laughs off-camera," Raver reports, "then really dive into some heavy-duty territory when the cameras rolled. Greg was a great partner to be able to have some laughs with ... and thank goodness, because there weren't a lot of laughs in the script."

Indeed, Grunberg says, "We were shooting in an area where everybody who lives there knows about this story. It was very big news there. There are so many questions I have about it myself, it was really interesting to play a detective in this and kind of keep those questions alive.

"Luckily, Kim takes the same approach that I do, which is to do my homework to a fault," says Grunberg, a former "Heroes" star who will tackle series work again in NBC's "Love Bites" at midseason.

Directed by television veteran Peter Werner, who has handled such other Lifetime films as "Gracie's Choice" and "Girl, Positive," "Bond of Silence" keeps Raver front and center. She likes having a project rest largely on her shoulders after being part of so many ensemble casts, including "24" and "Grey's Anatomy."

"I would love to start producing eventually as well," she says, "because I love the process from start to finish: finding a piece, building it, casting it and putting all the pieces of the puzzle together. I do enjoy that pressure - maybe it comes from being from New York! - but you know you're never doing it alone.

"I've had some really fine examples of people who do that extremely well. For instance, I learned so much from Kiefer Sutherland (Raver's leading man on '24'). He set the bar so high, everyone would want to rise to that level. He was extremely professional, talented, intelligent and caring. Watching someone like that is very inspirational."

While Katy Hutchison is a real person, she's also the latest addition to Raver's stable of strong female characters also encompassing such other shows as "Third Watch" and "Lipstick Jungle."

"I think television, especially now, is such a fantastic medium for actors in general," the actress reflects, "and particularly for strong women. What I love about these characters is that they've all been somewhat flawed and multidimensional."

Howard Gordon to Share Firsthand Assessment of the Iraq War

Howard Gordon (right) poses with a member of the U.S. military during a recent trip to Iraq.  (Photo: Daniel Symonds)
By Nancy Ganiard Smith,

2010-08-12

In May, Palisadian Howard Gordon traveled as part of a select delegation to observe the process of political and military transition in Iraq. His assessments and perspective, to be shared tomorrow evening at 7:30 p.m. at the University Synagogue, 11960 Sunset Blvd., coincide with a pivotal moment in the war's history. Just last week, President Obama announced an end to the combat mission and a major reduction in U.S. forces by the end of August.

Gordon, a 20-year entertainment-industry veteran who was executive producer of the hit series '24,' joined a small group of U.S. business leaders handpicked by the Pacific Council on International Policy to assess firsthand the challenges and successes of the U.S. military's current and planned 'drawdown' efforts during an intensive four-day trip to Iraq. Ultimately, the delegation's mission was to share its observations with the public as a service to the U.S. Department of Defense.

'The caveat was that we were not experts; we were all very mindful of this,' Gordon said during an interview on Monday. 'We were simply guests who were willing to listen and process what we observed.'

Travel to Baghdad proved challenging. When the Iraqi government abruptly cancelled flights on Gryphon Air, a commercial contractor, the Pacific Council team was forced to travel to Bahrain, where they were able to 'hitch a flight' on a U.S. Navy C-23B Sherpa to Kuwait. From Kuwait, delegates were transferred to a C-130 to Baghdad, where they stayed at Saddam Hussein's Al Faw Palace, now the U.S. military base known as Camp Victory.

While there, delegates met with top-level U.S. and Iraqi officials, including General Raymond T. Odierno, commanding general of U.S. Forces in Iraq, and Christopher R. Hill, U.S. ambassador to Iraq.

Later, members of the group flew by Black Hawk helicopter to Karbala, Shia Islam's second-holiest city. There, they met with Amal al-Din al Hir, governor of Karbala Province, and his staff and had an opportunity to meet with Iraqi civilians, soldiers and civic leaders. The last leg of the trip back in Baghdad featured a meeting with Major General Michael Barbero, who invited members to observe Iraqi police training exercises.

'Whether or not you supported the war when it started, the fact is we're there,' says Gordon, a registered Democrat who was quick to point out the nonpartisan nature of the Pacific Council, considered the premier international-affairs organization focused on policy issues of special concern to the West Coast.

'The question now is what is our responsibility to the Iraqis and to ourselves? So many men and women have lost their lives. It's been a huge investment as a nation. What should we do to not squander this tremendous sacrifice?' Gordon asked.

These questions have become even more urgent as the American force in Iraq will be reduced to 50,000 transitional troops by month's end (as compared to 144,000 military men and women when President Obama took office). A full withdrawal is anticipated by the end of 2011.

'There's a lot of positive news coming from Iraq,' said Gordon, who feels frustrated by the lack of media coverage'positive or negative'and overall short attention span of the country in relation to the Iraq war. 'It may feel like old news, but not to the Iraqis and Americans who are still there. By and large, I was impressed by everyone I met and their degree of professionalism and commitment to the mission.'

Gordon cited as a major step toward stability the success of the Iraqis holding an election in spring 2010 (despite its protracted outcome) that didn't erupt in chaos.

'Some of our worst fears have not come to pass,' he says. 'Despite this, it's absolutely a work in progress. We won't know the result of this transition for years to come.'

Gordon hopes to stir serious discussion during his Friday night presentation, one that will also touch upon some of the lighter moments of his trip, including how he surprised General Odierno, a huge fan of '24,' with a phone call from star Kiefer Sutherland.

'It's not an easy story to tell; it's complex and complicated with no right answers,' said the longtime resident, who lives here with his wife, Cambria, and their three children.

'Assuming that a stable and democratic Iraq is in our national interest, the challenge for Council members and me is how to keep that in the minds of our citizens and the politicians they elect.'

The event, held in conjunction with University Synagogue's Friday night Shabbat service, is open to the public.

Kiefer Sutherland in Widevox!

This blog entry has been translated from Swedish to English via Google Translator

- Hey, we would like to reserve a few hours of your Gothenburg Studio.

- Absolutely, we have summer hours.  What is the project?

- Yes, there is one actor who is in Sweden and will read a few television commercials, via the link on New York.

- Okay, we will solve it.  Who is the actor?

- Kiefer Sutherland. - Kiefer Sutherland.

... Silence.

- Excuse me?!?

- Kiefer Sutherland.

- Yes, I heard but then ... Det är ju JACK BAUER! It's Jack Bauer!

- Exactly. Do you want to ...

- YES!

- Is it possible if ...

- ABSOLUTELY!

- Can we also ask you ...

- NO PROBLEM:-D

When one of the leading actor and announcer voices want to come to one's studio, we were not late to say yes. Kiefer Sutherland is not only known as CTU agent Jack Bauer (from the series "24" for those who missed the 2000s most exciting TV series), but a popular and extremely välavlönda voice in advertising.  Until September, he is in Sweden to record a Lars von Trier film, which unfortunately clashed with one of his promotional duties. So on Friday evening, he came up to our studio in Gothenburg Stig Berg House, and read up a bunch of TV commercials for Bank of America.

Mr. Sutherland has been their "Spokes person" for 5 years now, a job he certainly may xx million - per year!
Although I think I can promise you that this crazy high fee is a bargain for Bank of America. Imagine being in the middle of the deepest financial crisis have "Jack Bauer's voice" in all its television advertising, the man who rescued the U.S. from terrorism and other unpleasantness during the 2000s. It can feel more secure for a Yank?

Here you can see and hear some of his early television commercials for the same client.

How was he? yes, nice and professional sick.  Our microphone enjoyed the whole evening to get their membranes have been saved by this divinely beautiful voice.  But what struck us most was that he was only 1.76 long.  Not nearly as big and beefy action hero as believed.  Thinking of trying to wrestle him down on the floor, mostly for the sake of it.  But on reflection, it is not related to Jack Bauer. Not after all he has done for the world :-)
