'Melancholia' News & New Promo Photo Of Kiefer Sutherland

‘Melancholia’ Goes VOD On October 7th, One Month Before It Hits Theaters On November 11th

Don’t act so surprised. We pretty much figured this might happen when Magnolia picked up the film at the beginning of the year and as is usual for the indie label, one of the biggest arthouse films of the year will be available in your living room first before you can see it on the big screen. That’s right, Lars Von Trier‘s “Melancholia” will go digital on October 7th before getting a limited release on November 11th.

We’ll leave the VOD/theatrical debate for others but it’s a bit of a mixed bag. On the one hand, if you live in a flyover state that probably wouldn’t get “Melancholia” anyway, it means you can watch the movie right away and not long after it hits TIFF and the New York Film Festival. But on the other, it means that most will only experience Von Trier’s gorgeously shot film on a small screen, a shame really because this emotionally apocalyptic film might the director’s best looking effort in years and certainly deserves to be viewed in a theater. But realistically speaking, “Melancholia” was never going to light up the box office.

A two hour plus film that is a metaphor for depression—even with a cast featuring Kirsten Dunst, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Kiefer Sutherland, Charlotte Rampling, John Hurt, Alexander Skarsgård, Stellan Skarsgård and Udo Kier—there weren’t going be lines around the block for it.

For Oscar watchers, take note. The VOD bow won’t affect any potential campaign for Dunst as the film already had its Oscar qualifying theatrical run very quietly in July in Los Angeles (you snooze, you lose). A new U.S. poster—which looks exactly like every international iteration of the one-sheet so far—is below, with a couple of new pics. [Vulture]

'24' Flashback Video - 8/9/11

24NY: 24 Music Video with Jack Bauer/Kiefer Sutherland from matt fife on Vimeo.

This is my director's cut of a short day well spent with Kiefer. He's a joy to work with, hits every mark you show him, and springs into character immediately, not to mention he's just a regular, humble dude who likes to have fun.

Directed by Matt Fife, Cinematography by Predrag Dubravcic, Steadicam by Kevin Rafferty (shot on the RED ONE).

MUSIC BY THE DEAD WEATHER.

The story behind the eighth season of 24 was set in NYC, though the production was shot entirely in LA. To establish the new landscape for Jack Bauer, we teamed with Kiefer Sutherland to shoot an ambitious narrative through the busy streets of Chinatown, Manhattan.

My instincts were to create a context that immediately engaged the character. The chase and capture storyline follows Jack as he pursues a fugitive suspect in question. With the shooting schedule especially tight, set ups were captured on the run with Kiefer delivering the intensity and integrity that defines him as one of the best. Kiefer has always been good to me; he is the real deal, on and off the set. Thankfully, we all made it home from NYC in one piece. Two weeks later, my son Lincoln was born.

'24' Alumnus, Francesco Quinn (aka Sayed Ali, Season 2) Dies At Age 48

Very sad news. Thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends. He created one of the best, most memorable villains on '24'...

The ‘Platoon’ and ‘Young and the Restless’ actor was running up the street with his son before he suffered an apparent heart attack, his neighbor says.

Francesco Quinn, son of legendary Oscar winner Anthony Quinn, died Friday night near his Malibu home. The actor, 48, was reportedly running in the street with his son Max when he collapsed, according to a neighbor who attempted to revive him.

“There was a moment where we thought that we were making progress, that we started to sense that this could work,” neighbor Tim Lawrence told Malibu Patch. “We were working feverishly at it. But at a certain point it turned, and there was no response.”

Paramedics came to the scene, but Quinn was pronounced dead at the hospital, the local Patch site reports.

Francesco was born in Rome on March 22, 1963, to Anthony Quinn and his second wife, Iolanda. He had a role in Oliver Stone’s 1986 Oscar-winning film Platoon, as drug dealer Rhah. He later appeared in several TV shows, including The Young and the Restless, NCIS, ER and 24.

He is survived by his wife Valentina Castellani-Quinn and three children. “Francesco was my soulmate and the best father for Sofia, Michela and Max,” Valentina told Malibu Patch. “I will love him forever.”

FOX Entertainment President Kevin Reilly Calls 'TOUCH' Pilot "Extraordinary"

Not that there was ever any doubt that Tim Kring's Fox pilot Touch starring Kiefer Sutherland would get on the air, but the network wanted to reserve final judgement until after it sees the finished pilot. Fox entertainment president Kevin Reilly told reporters at TCA today that he saw the pilot last night and it was "extraordinary", firmly sealing the project's midseason series pickup. "It's a new character but it does have some doze of Jack Bauer in it," Reilly said about Sutherland's new role.
