Kiefer Sutherland smiles when he talks about anticipating the late-April/early-May start of production on the big-screen "24" movie. "That's like going home," he says of getting back into Jack Bauer's skin.

It's been more than five years since the "24" team first set its sights on making a feature. Sutherland acknowledges, "That process has taken us so long; it's such a complicated script to write. Normally, we have 24 hours to tell a story. Trying to condense it into two hours involves a lot of hard choices: What kind of story do you want to tell? How political do you want to make it? How character-driven do you want to make it?"

Sutherland was in fine form at the Television Critics Association Winter Press Tour this week, talking about his Jan. 25-debuting Fox "Touch" series that has him as the father of a mute, possibly autistic boy who has an astonishing understanding of numbers and their correlation to the universe.

The star was also was among the notables on hand at Fox's party at the historic Castle Green Hotel in Pasadena, Calif., where he chatted away gamely and amiably even though a small group of reporters pretty much backed him into a small space behind a grand piano. He elaborated on some of what he talked about at the earlier press conference -- including the "24" film.

As far as the answers to all those questions about how political and/or character-driven the big screen "24" will be, he laughed and said, "You'll have to wait and see it." He said that several "great actors have expressed interest in (acting in) it, either as an ally or villain."

Sutherland also anticipates more big names will turn up on "Touch" -- which already boasts Danny Glover as a professor who has a handle on matters where quantum physics meets metaphysics. "Because it's a procedural drama as opposed to a serialized show, we could get someone in and out as quickly as an episode," noted Sutherland, who is also a producer on the series. "Or if someone was interested in being involved in a longer arc, I'm sure we could accommodate them."

Sutherland definitely made the most of his two years away from the TV cameras. Asked what the time meant to him, he said, "I got some rest. I got to think about other things I wanted to do. I got to do two films I was very excited about, with very different characters." Those are Mira Nair's upcoming "The Reluctant Fundamentalist," with Liev Schreiber and Kate Hudson, and Lars von Trier's "Melancholia," with Kirsten Dunst.

"And doing 'That Championship Season' on Broadway. I did those things and also had some time off and got some rest -- and realized that I missed working."

People, let's all just clear the air now: Kiefer Sutherland is not (I repeat, not) trying to escape the shadow of driven "24" hero Jack Bauer.

The actor, who appeared at the Television Critics Assn. press tour to promote his new series "Touch," was, understandably, peppered with numerous questions about his past life as the up-against-the clock special agent and whether his latest turn on Fox was an attempt to get audiences to forget about those eight years of adrenaline.

"Touch," created and written by Tim Kring ("Heroes"), centers around a father's relationship with his mute 11-year-old son, who has the ability to predict events and make connections. In the process, the show often explores the relationship between spirituality and science.

When he was sent the script after playing Bauer for eight years, Sutherland was doing a theater production and wasn't ready to tackle another TV project, he recalled.

"I really wanted to spend some time apart from the amazing experience I had on '24' and try some different things," he said. "I was at page 35 [of the script], and I went ... 'I’m in real trouble,' because it was just so beautifully written."

OK. Whatever. But is this an attempt to get away from Jack Bauer?

Sutherland offered this: "It's nice diversion from '24,' yes. But the choice, and reason I made the choice, was because it spoke to me."

"The one parallel I can bring from the two characters," he added, "is that Jack Bauer was asked to save the day, and there was always going to be casualties. And Mark [Bohm] is never going to have the perfect idyllic relationship with his son. They both never completely win. For whatever reason, it's something I’m drawn to as an actor."

Settled? Not quite. Later in the panel, Sutherland would find himself , once more, uttering the words: "It's not because I wanted to get away from '24.' "

What a relief, because now we really want to know what the status is on the "24" movie!

"Hopefully, we will be shooting at end of April, beginning of May," he said.

A preview of "Touch" will air Jan. 25. The series premiere is March 19.

Kiefer Sutherland finally gave fans of Fox's real-time terrorism drama "24" the answers that they've been waiting for, while addressing a group of reporters at the 2012 Television Critics Association winter press tour.

"We will be shooting end of April or beginning of May," said Sutherland, via a tweet from TV Guide.He then added that the movie will be "relatively a direct continuation" after the "24" finale. "We're talking maybe six months from the end of that episode," reports TVLine.

Similar to the series, the film will follow a 24-hour crisis period for the Counter Terrorist Unit.

Meanwhile, Sutherland also adressed his return to the Fox Network in the new midseason drama, "Touch." The actor revealed that he had no intention of returning to TV, until he read the "Touch" script," which he connected to on a "personal level," TV Guide reported via tweet.

"Touch" stars Sutherland as Martin Bohm, a former journalist and luggage handler whose wife was killed in the September 11 attacks. His son, played by David Mazouz, is an autistic and mute boy, who is obsessed with numbers and can predict future events.

During the TCA panel, Sutherland told the group of reporters: "The real driving force for my character is simply communicating with my son."

"Touch" premieres March 19 on Fox.

The script for 'Touch' brought '24' star Kiefer Sutherland back to TV. The Fox show gets a sneak preview Jan. 25 after 'American Idol.'

Kiefer Sutherland runs through a packed Grand Central Station, dodging bystanders and scanning the crowd for suspicious activity. The minutes fly by — seen in frequent close-ups of ticking clocks — drawing closer to a potentially explosive moment. Sutherland confronts a guy on a public phone, spins him around and starts punching.

Wait, is Jack Bauer back on TV?

He's not, but Sutherland is returning to the Fox network. Only his new drama, "Touch," owes more to feature films like"Crash" and "Short Cuts" than to his previous award-winning espionage series, "24." He just happens, in the first episode of "Touch," to be racing against time to unravel a mystery, an unintentional bone for "24" fans since it was written before Sutherland signed on.

The new drama, which will have a sneak preview Jan. 25 after "American Idol," centers on Sutherland's character, Martin Bohm, a former journalist and single dad to a special-needs 11-year-old boy.

The son, Jake, who's remote, combative and uncommunicative, may be autistic, but he exhibits savant-like qualities with gadgets and numbers. He can't bear to be touched, hence the series' title.

As it turns out, as revealed by an eccentric professor, played by series costar Danny Glover, Jake can detect patterns and relationships between seemingly disparate people and events. He might even be able to see the future.

It's up to Sutherland's Bohm to "follow the bread crumbs" and figure out the significance of the boy's mathematical clues, according to "Touch" creator and executive producer Tim Kring.

Kring, who also created NBC's former hit "Heroes," said he'd been thinking since shortly after the Sept. 11 attacks about writing a series that would blend some mystical and scientific elements. (There are several references to 9/11 in the pilot, including the reason Sutherland's character is a widower: His stockbroker wife died in the World Trade Center blast.)

At the core of "Touch" is a father and son tale, and layered on top are ideas of interconnectivity and serendipity, near misses and close calls, those moments of wondering, "If it hadn't been for this, what would've happened to that?"

"I've been dealing with this theme for a long time, in 'Heroes' and before that, 'Crossing Jordan,' of people's lives being connected in seemingly random ways that turn out not to be random at all," Kring said. "I wanted to elevate that theme to the forefront because I think people will automatically be able to relate to it."

The 13-episode series, formally premiering March 19 after "House," will tell stand-alone stories each week but weave an ongoing mythology for fans who want a deeper dive. One of the main story lines is Bohm's struggle to prove he's a competent father since Jake's outbursts and out-of-control behavior caused the state's child welfare agency to take him out of the home for evaluation.

Though it's grounded in real-world New York City, there will be borderline supernatural issues to ponder, Kring said, such as the possible existence of others just like Jake. And there will be some heart-pounding action for "24" junkies, but it'll be mixed with lower-adrenaline emotional stakes.

Bohm will be "a very real, very human character," who's devoted to his kid and stretched too thin, like many parents. Bohm, along with the actor who plays him, "has his own kind of heroism and strength," Kring said.

To Sutherland, who had been working in live theater, going back to a full-time TV series wasn't his priority. He didn't miss the demands of a weekly show, especially one like "24" where he appeared in nearly every scene, he said, but he was bowled over by the "Touch" script.

"I knew I had to do it because it hit me on a spiritual level," Sutherland said recently. "As it turns out, the workload is almost the same as '24.' 'Touch' isn't as physical but the emotional demands are much greater."

Though the show's based in Los Angeles and the production never leaves town, the show globe trots to carry the theme of diverse and interlocking connections. A misplaced cellphone in one country, for instance, skips around the world, eventually containing data and video evidence of where it's been and the people who've used it.

"That idea of connectivity, of breaking down the barriers of language, culture, religion, and showing that we all want the same things — it's imperative right now," Sutherland said. "It's something we may've lost track of, but the show reminds us."

The clock has started on 24, the feature version of the Imagine Entertainment/Fox series. The project, which brings back Kiefer Sutherland’s tireless government operative Jack Bauer. Mark Bomback–a favorite writer at 20th Century Fox writingThe Wolverine and Shadow Divers–will turn in the latest script draft by year’s end. Imagine and the studio have about five directors in mind–no, Tony Scott is not attached anymore–and it will all begin happening very quickly in the early part of next year. The goal is to get the film into production to match Sutherland’s availability, which begins in April. That should give producer Brian Grazer something to do after he completes producing the Academy Awards and it is certainly good news for fans of the show who were beginning to fear the project wouldn’t happen.

My Thoughts On The Indian TV Version Of '24'

When I first read the story from the Times of India website about Anil Kapoor buying the TV rights to '24' to do a version for Indian TV with him playing the Indian version of Jack Bauer I honestly didn't think it was that big of a deal. I was actually kind of ho-hum about it.

Then I thought about it some more...

As I mentioned in my '24' 10th anniversary article, NO ONE can be Jack Bauer other than Kiefer Sutherland. He BECAME Jack Bauer and it would be unthinkable in my opinion for anyone to attempt to be Jack Bauer, I don't care what version you're trying to do. It would be like having someone other William Shatner play Capt. Kirk!

Don't get me wrong, this is not to criticize Anil Kapoor, he's a very fine actor and was excellent in season 8 of '24' as President Hassan. But as Jack Bauer??? Are they kidding???

I appreciate wanting to bring '24' to a new audience, but the audience in India has already seen the ORIGINAL '24' and loved it...do they really want this one? According to the comments on Facebook and tweets from '24' fans in India, the vast majority say NO WAY!!

Perhaps a version of '24' with Mr. Kapoor playing a different agent might be better, but to try and have an "Indian version" of Jack Bauer when Kiefer's Jack Bauer was so beloved by Indian audiences already seems like an insult to '24' fans in India and '24' fans everywhere in my opinion.

Rather than doing this, it would have been nice if the '24' producers and FOX powers that be would have given not only Indian audiences, but audiences worldwide another season of '24' for ALL of us to enjoy rather than cheapen it by doing a "Bollywood" version of it.

Just my 2 cents on the matter.

Very few television shows can truly be said to be groundbreaking. The premiere of a new drama on FOX 10 years ago today changed television forever. 24 established a new type of real-time drama for television and Jack Bauer as an iconic hero known world-wide.

Premiering a couple of months after 9/11, audiences were ready for an on-screen hero like Jack Bauer who would relentlessly go after the bad guys even if he had to break some rules along the way. Season one was written before 9/11 not about the type of terrorists the preceding seasons were about, but Jack Bauer's relentless pursuit to protect innocent people resonated with audiences right away.

It did take awhile for 24 to find a larger audience. The first season's ratings weren't stellar but once the DVD of season 1 was released, the show took off in the U.S and especially overseas. The world LOVED Jack Bauer and the format of the show. It was so different than anything on television at the time.

Thankfully for fans, FOX stuck with the show after the first season and we were able to see 7 more (bad) days in Jack Bauer's life.

For this 10th anniversary, I've come up with 24 reasons I believe have made this show so unique and leaves such an impressive, enduring legacy...

#24 - The Real-Time Concept - '24' was the first prime-time drama to be in real-time. Meaning if it took Jack Bauer 20 minutes to get somewhere then you would not see Jack until he reached is destination 20 minutes later. Admittedly, over the years the show kind of fudged the real-time aspect of the show, but nonetheless it was a clever concept that kept the show interesting and helped to incorporate the "up against the clock" tension in the show.

#23 - The '24' Boxes - Probably one of the most recognizable aspects of '24' are the boxes showing various characters and scenes going on in an episode. Another cool, unique characteristic of this show. It was also an integral part of keeping the pacing of the show what it was as well.

#22 - 24's Creators - '24' would not even exist if it weren't for the creative minds of Joel Surnow and Bob Cochran. Joel Surnow came up with the real-time concept and they were also two of 24's best writers. THANK YOU Joel and Bob for coming up with such an incredible, entertaining show! 24 fans will be forever grateful.

#21 - 24's Casting - Some of the best casting of characters on any television show was on '24'. 24's casting directors had a knack for finding just the right actors to portray the characters on this show, in particular the villains.

#20 - 24's Villains - Speaking of villains, some of the most interesting, compelling villains on any TV show or movie could be found on '24'. Who can forget The Drazens, Sayed Ali, Ramon and Hector Salazar, Michael Amador, Stephen Saunders, Habib Marwan, President Logan, Cheng Gi, Jonas Hodges and of course the evil Nina Myers played by the amazing Sarah Clarke. '24' did a masterful job of making their villains so interesting to watch and have some depth to them, not just cardboard cut outs.

#19 - The Music - What can you say about the amazing music score for '24' by Sean Callery? So deserving of the many Emmy's he won for this show, it's been said Sean's music was like another character in '24' and that's so very true. His compositions added so much to '24' by helping to enhance the drama and tension that was so much of an important part of this show. Many kudos to Sean and his musical talents!

#18 - Ticking Clock - The beeping digital clock at the very beginning of each episode and clock ticking sound throughout each episode is probably the most recognizable aspect of '24'. Remember the pilot episode and how different the clock sounded then as opposed to the episodes after that? It sounds so funny now when you go back and watch the pilot.

#17 - Use of Technology - Try to imagine '24' without cell phones. Hard to isn't it? I don't think a show like this would work without cell phones. They were such an integral part of the show. Also the use of other computer technology and com units were unique to '24'. Some of it was a bit faster and a little more advanced than what was available at the time, but one of the best things about '24' was the magic Chloe could create on those CTU computers! Although looking back now, those cell phones in season 1 really look old!

#16 - 24's Presidents - There have been Presidents on television before, but I would argue none as memorable as the ones on '24'. The top of the list has to belong to David Palmer. No other TV President had the command and presence Dennis Haysbert brought to that role. Never understood why Mr. Haysbert did not win an Emmy for season 2. Speaking of Emmy snubs, that brings us to the other end of the Presidential spectrum, the evil President Charles Logan. Masterfully played by Greg Itzin, Logan was probably Jack Bauer's greatest nemesis other than Nina Myers. Since he survived a suicide attempt in season 8, I'm hoping we might see him appear again in the 24 film.

Season 1

#15 - CTU Directors - The leadership at CTU was very important to '24' certainly had a variety of leaders starting with Jack Bauer himself in season 1. From George Mason to Erin Driscoll, Jack had to work with (and against) several CTU directors. My favorite had to be George Mason. A great character that you should have hated but you couldn't completely because of his sarcasm. George had some of the best lines in all of 24's 8 seasons. He's also a character who ended up being a hero by going down with the plane with the nuke in season 2. Season 2, 10pm-11pm for me the all-time best all around episode of 24. Another memorable director was Bill Buchanan. The most competent CTU director, Bill seemed to understand Jack better than any of the others previously. Bill even heroically sacrificed himself during the White House siege in season 7. Fans were very sad to see Bill go but he was given a hero's exit as he should have.

#14 - Jack's "Man Bag" - Ah, Jack's "man bag"...what all was he carrying in there? Hmmm...it sure came in handy for Jack during season 5. Only Kiefer Sutherland could still look masculine while carrying that thing. I missed seeing it on a regular basis after season 5.

#13 - 24's Action Scenes - One of the signature aspects of '24' were the big action scenes. Big explosions especially. '24' had excellent stunt and pyrotechnics people who pulled off some of the most realistic, exciting action scenes you could find on TV or even in films.

#12 - Memorable One Episode Characters - One of the unique qualities about '24' were the memorable characters that only appeared in one episode. The first was Lauren the waitress who was held "hostage" by Jack Bauer in season 1. Such a realistic portrayal by the actress in that episode. I never could figure out why she turned Jack in since she seemed to believe his story. Another stand out was George Mason's son John who Mason brought to his office so he could say goodbye since he was dying from radiation poisoning. This scene showed us for the first time that George had a soft side. Wonderfully acted and written scene. There were many other memorable one episode characters in '24' but those two always seemed to stand out for most fans.

#11 - CTU - The physical epi-center of '24' of course was CTU. CTU certainly changed a lot from the small, kind of plain setting of season 1. That facility went through as much as Jack Bauer at times. Bombed in season 2, a nerve gas attack in season 5 and held hostage by Chinese mercenaries in season 6. A lot of action happened at CTU not just out in the field. Interestingly, the actual National Counterterrorism Center in Washington D.C. looks very much like CTU and believed to have been modeled after the one in the show.

Season 2

#10 - CTU Ringtone - Other than the digital clock beep, the most recognizable sound of '24' has to be the CTU ringtone. Imagine how many fans have made that their cell phone ringtone, including myself! I really missed hearing it during the last 2 seasons.

#9 - Female Hired Assasin (Mandy) - Something you don't see very often...a hired gun who is a female. How surprising was that to see that the flirty, seemingly ditzy woman sitting next to Martin Belkin on the plane in season one turned out to be an assassin who blew up the plane?! What I loved about '24', they would shake things up by doing something different like coming up with a character like Mandy.

#8 - Chloe O'Brien - Where would Jack have been since Day 3 without good ole loyal Chloe? Their relationship started a bit rocky at the beginning of day 3, but Jack soon came to rely on Chloe and could count on her more than anyone else over the years. She always had his back no matter what and would even risk her career many times by going off book to help him out. Next to Jack, Chloe in my opinion is the best character on the show. Mary Lynn Rajskub did an incredible job playing the socially awkward Chloe who could also manage to inject humor into the show without it seeming out of place. It would be a crime if Chloe is not in the 24 feature film.

#7 - Jack Bauer Kills - It was always interesting to see what new and different ways the writers would come up with for Jack Bauer to off the bad guys. Some of the most memorable to me were Marshall Goren (S2 - "I'm gonna need a hacksaw"), killing the Russian baddie on the sub with a knife in the throat (S5 - "We're clear") and one of my favorites, the ax to the chest of the bad guy chasing Jack and the informant in episode 1 of season 8. Amazingly shot as well with the fall off the staircase at the end. So many memorable, creative Jack kills over the 8 seasons.

Season 3

#6 - Moles - What would '24' be without moles inside CTU trying to thwart them and Jack Bauer? There have been many (Jamey Farrell, Roger Stanton, Marianne Taylor, Walt Cummings, etc.) but none as shocking and memorable as Nina Myers revealed as a mole in episode 23 of season 1. I will never forget how shocked I was when she was revealed to be working with the Drazens. Maybe the best shocking revelation about a character in TV history.

#5 - Jack's Interrogations - As memorable as Jack's kills were even more memorable have to be Jack's interrogations. So many great ones! Jack with Ted Coffel in the limo & the towel is probably the most memorable. What was brilliant about it was the first part of that interrogation Jack didn't even touch the guy but he was scary and you knew he meant business. Other great interrogations was Jack and Nina in season 2 (my personal favorite), Syed Ali (season 2), the fake setup of killing his family to get him to talk...awesome! So many compelling interrogation scenes through all the seasons, hard to mention them all here but Jack could interrogate a suspect like no other.

Season 4

#4 - "Edge Of Your Seat" Tension - No other show could put you on the edge of your seat like '24'. Building the tension to the next surprising scene or plot twist, no other show did it better. An example that comes to mind for me is in season 6. When Jack had to defuse the suitcase nuke at the apartment where Morris was held and forced to arm it. You knew with Chloe's help Jack would manage to disarm it, but in that scene the show managed to still create such tension in that scene you actually started to worry if it would go off! Amazing work to make you feel that tension in a scene where you knew how it would turn out.

#3 - Unexpected Character Deaths - One of the most unique aspects about '24' was it's willingness to kill off characters that any other show would never dream of. As sad as it was that Teri Bauer was killed or that sweet, innocent Edgar died during the nerve gas attack, I LOVE '24' for having the guts to do it. SO many other shows would lead you to think a beloved character would be killed only to be saved at the last minute, but '24' was the first one I remember to actually do the unthinkable and that's what made it so unique and different from any other show...doing the unexpected.

Season 5

#2 - Surprise Plot Twists - No other show could knock your socks off with a surprise plot twist than '24'. So many great ones during it's run, just when you think the show could not shock you they would do it again. The best and most frequent plot twists were probably in the first season. Jamey Farrell being a mole, Alan York is actually NOT Alan York but Kevin Carroll working for Gaines. Then Kevin Carroll turns out to be the guy meeting with Ted Coffell! And of course the ultimate plot twist, Nina Meyers actually worked for the Drazens. Probably the biggest, most shocking plot twist since Nina had to have been President Logan being behind everything that happened on day 5. Another brilliant plot twist that '24' managed to pull off after I thought the audience could not be surprised anymore. These surprise twists are one of the things that made the show so much fun to watch!

Season 6

24: Redemption (TV Movie)

#1 - Casting Kiefer Sutherland As Jack Bauer - Think about this for a moment...try to imagine anyone else playing Jack Bauer other than Kiefer Sutherland...hard to imagine isn't it? For me as great as the concept of the show was and the writing and everything else, the casting of Kiefer Sutherland as Jack Bauer is really what made the show as successful as it was and last as many seasons as it did. You could not have a more perfect type of actor to portray Jack Bauer. Kiefer had the commanding presence needed for a bigger than life character such as Jack, but he could also portray just as perfectly a soft side when necessary in relation to the people he cared about in his life such as his wife, daughter and other people he wanted to protect.

Season 7

Season 8

Kiefer has those gifts as an actor to make Jack a well-rounded, compelling character that you care about and just want to keep watching. I have read so many comments about how this show and especially Jack Bauer is missed so much. I miss him too. Other shows on TV now are trying to give us the "new Jack Bauer" well, they may be fine shows and fine actors, but there will NEVER be another Jack Bauer in my opinion and NO ONE could portray Jack Bauer better than Kiefer Sutherland. For me, '24' is Kiefer Sutherland and Kiefer Sutherland is '24'. He was truly the heart and soul of the show as Howard Gordon has said. There will never be another character like Jack Bauer and no other actor who could fully inhabit that character and become Jack the way Kiefer could.

Sadly, '24' is no longer on television but thankfully there are DVD's and Netflix and other ways to relive this great show for many years to come. The good news is that Jack Bauer is not gone forever, looks like there will be a movie shot next year (spring 2012) and thankfully '24' fans will be able to see one more bad day in the life of Jack Bauer.

Hurry to the theater screen Jack...we miss you.

Still dissecting the trailer for Fox's Touch? Frustrated you can't start an actual countdown to the return of Kiefer Sutherlandbecause the show still doesn't have an airdate? You're not alone.

Fox makes Kiefer Sutherland's return to primetime official

The upcoming drama from Heroes boss Tim Kring stars 24'sSutherland doing what he does best: making sure the world doesn't self-destruct. Standing in for Jack Bauer is Touch'sMartin Bohm, widower and father to a mute, severely autistic son, Jake. The problem? Jake harbors the uncanny ability to connect patterns and discover the meaning behind seemingly unrelated events happening all over the world.... In other words, he can predict when bad stuff is going to go down, among other things, and his dad Martin's the one who will have to deal. (Get ready for emotional Kiefer, world!)

Just for kicks — and because we still miss 24 — let's count the ways Touch, without meaning to, will continue its legacy, using the trailer as our guide:

Problematic kids: Sure, Kim Bauer got kidnapped. (Several times.) Sure, she dropped out of school to become an au pair, and later got caught in a cougar trap. But she could scream and call her dad for help. Martin's son Jake doesn't talk at all. So when Jake gets a hankering to climb cell towers (which look really tall in that trailer!) at 3:18 p.m. on a daily basis without communicating why... well, it would appear Kiefer's TV offspring are forever cursed.

"Dammit!": Sources say Martin will unleash one in the first episode of Touch. That's what these kids — and the fate of the world — will do to a guy.

Suicide bombers: Yes, seriously. There's one — a young one — in the pilot for Touch. Whether or not Martin is the guy to defuse the situation... but who else is going to, right?

Cell phones: From the looks of things, they'll command a starring role in Touch, handy for preventing disasters foreseen by Jake. With any luck, they'll be as good as Jack Bauer's supermobiles, which grabbed signals from the bowels of the deepest terrorist hangouts, instantly transmitted codes, uploaded maps and all other manner of life-saving, key-decrypting intel. Oh, would it were that our iPhones came equipped with 1,000,000,000G technology.

"New York": Los Angeles stands in for the Big Apple in Touch too!

A ticking clock: Martin's racing to stop these events from happening (or to make sure they happen correctly). He's racing to figure out what his son is trying to tell him. He's racing to solve the world's mysteries. Kiefer will never stop running. Never!

Dynamic trio brings the action to MIPCOM, with cross-platform creativity focus

There was a buzz of anticipation in the Grand Auditorium for the Media Mastermind keynote session today. Fox Broadcasting Company’s president of entertainment Kevin Reilly took to the stage first, talking about his firm’s strategy and view of the evolving media market. He was then joined by creator/writer/executive producer Tim Kring and actor Kiefer Sutherland for the second half of the session to discuss their new show Touch.

Mark Kaner, president of 20th Century Fox Television Distribution introduced the session, reminding the audience that Reilly has launched “countless” shows over his career, making his first mark by developing ER, and subsequently bringing The Sopranosto television. A stint as president of NBC Entertainment ensued, overseeing The Office, 30 Rock, Heroes and The Biggest Loser among other shows, before he returned to Fox for his current role.

“He’s in charge of all social media initiatives and all of our digital initiatives, and he really is pushing our new business going forward,” said Kaner, before Reilly strolled on-stage to begin the keynote.

Reilly began by saying he continues to be inspired by moments of creative innovation, and by the idea of having a foot in each world: the talent that creates the product, and the business that distributes and makes money from that product.

“I love talent (actors), because they’re passionate. They can be emotional and irrational and unpredictable, but that’s okay,” he said. “However, in business we like things to be quantifiable and predictable. I don’t really want my head of finance to be passionate and emotional…” So moving a creative idea through this system, while retaining a spark of eccentricity and imagination, is his favourite task.

“What makes an idea viable versus what’s needed to make it original?” he continued. “For all the ambition and good intentions, far too often we end up with conventional product and organisations that can’t re-imagine their futures. How can that happen at a time when we need that most?”

Reilly moved on to a discussion of what creativity is, saying that the contradictory process is wired into our very nature: creativity is “a reversing of gears: to know and to unknow, simultaneously”. Which requires liberating ourselves from the established rules – often a hard task.

Reilly said he’s often asked how he can be sure that a particular show is going to be a hit. “The truth is, in some ways, the less I am sure, the more excited I am about the possibilities,” he said, before moving on to the subject of research.

“We often look to research to guide our decisions,” he continued. “I’ve seen it accurately identify a breakout hit like ER that many executives didn’t understand at first.” But… “Had I relied solely in research results, I would never have gone forward with some of the hit shows that I’m most proud of. The Office was a horrificially testing pilot!” British fans didn’t get it, and US viewers found it boring.

“When we tested Glee for example, we got the same result four times: It was a show nobody liked… It seemed to be rejected, and therein lies the problem. When you poll people about what they want, they don’t know how to tell you about what they want… when they can’t yet reimagine. Steve Jobs makes products that people never knew they couldn’t live without.”

“Creative incubation requires open-ended, uninterrupted time to step away from a problem we’re trying to solve,” he continued, while warning that business today is driven by “more, bigger, faster”. Thus, it’s important to actively schedule time for innovation.

So how is the media ecosystem evolving? “Our business is changing and more challenging than it’s ever been,” he said. “The marketplace is fragmented. Consumer behaviour is evolving amidst an explosion of new technologies… People want choice, mobility and free. We’re no longer just competing against other channels.”

However, Reilly said that for all this upheaval, “the web is showing its limitations“, with the value of premium TV content still creating emotional connections with viewers. “Potent TV franchises can migrate across all technologies and behaviours… they need us and we need them… The future isn’t either traditional or digital: it’s a feedback loop between the two.”

Reilly talked about audiences starting to use filtering mechanisms and social networks to decide when to watch TV shows (and which ones to watch). “Last week, Facebook kicked social TV into high gear,” noted Reilly.

“Today our network business model has been set up to count impressions. What we haven’t put enough thought into is how to count expressions… It’s how creative we are in engaging those fans and keeping them connected, even as they move away from the traditional network, that will determine how potent and powerful the networks are in the future.”

New comedy New Girl was pre-released for free on iTunes and video-on-demand services a fortnight before the official premiere. “We had over two million downloads for the two weeks prior to air,” he said, pointing to positive reaction on social networks. “We spiked in both viewer awareness and intent to view… The show opened with the biggest comedy ratings Fox has had in over 10 years.”

Reilly unveiled an extended trailer of the new Kring/Sutherland show Touch at this point in the keynote, before sitting down for some questions with journalist Kate Bulkley, as well as show creator Kring and star Sutherland.

“I didn’t expect to come back to television as quickly as I have,” said Sutherland. “There were some films that I wanted to do, some things I was developing… I got a call from Peter Chernin and a call from Kevin, who both asked me to take a look at the script. And I said ‘I’m really not anticipating going back to work at this time, so I don’t wanna waste your time’. And they told me ‘Just read it…’”

Hence the show, which Sutherland knew he wanted to do after reading 25 pages. “It’s a genius concept, but at the root of the story it is a very intimate personal story that has a thrilling aspect to it; that has drama attached to it… It had everything.”

Touch is about a man whose son never speaks, but sees the world through mathematical formulae, which may give him the power to see the future.

Sutherland said there are some familiar grounds in Touch, but that it’s a step on from 24. “The format for 24 was ‘Jack Bauer is gonna have a bad day’. It’s not that hard to catch up. This is a little more complicated than that… It’s the openness that this character provides for me that is what actually becomes challenging and very exciting.”

Over to Kring, who explained that Touch borrows some elements from Heroes, in that it tries to tell stories with an international scope through characters around the world who are interconnected in various ways. “We talked a lot about interconnectivity in Heroes. This takes that theme and really crystallises it. It’s the emerging story of our time: we are more connected than we ever dreamed, both biologically and spiritually.”

How does it differ from Heroes? Kring said that he tried to tell self-contained stories every week, rather than Heroes-style cliffhangers at the end of every episode. But there will be an overall mythology and story arc that fans can follow.

What about digital disruption and transmedia extensions? “Anyone that is pitching a show right now that’s not thinking about how it’s going to live across multiple platforms doesn’t have their eye on the idea that the audience. Once I started to see that the audience was fragmenting to different platforms, it became my job as a storyteller to figure out how to reach them… You have to fish where the fish are.”

He went on to talk about the idea of the audience connecting to one another around the show. “We are very interested in this idea of a synchronous experience,” he said. “People will text one another if you don’t create that experience for them to have a synchronous experience.”

Kiefer Sutherland has also gone into digital, acting in webisodes called The Confession. Why? Partly because he liked the script creatively, but also because “I wanted to find out how difficult it would be to access an audience out there… We did find an audience, and I think next time out, we’ll find a larger audience.”

With Touch, ”we’re trying to release this globally at the same time… at least close enough so that audience members… let’s say we create an area for all of our audience to congregate too. Someone in Africa or Australia can be talking to someone in Europe… and sharing specific interest.”

“I don’t wanna be held to day and date!” jumped in Reilly, quickly. “We’re going to get as close as we can.” And then he moved on to the idea of the extra material across different platforms and devices: “Just tacking that on as part of the marketing isn’t going to cut it any more“.

Kring talked about “aiming high” with the show: “a show that attempted to not only move people but to challenge people. In a sea of content out there, how do you break out? How do you make people feel? That’s the most important thing whether we challenge people intellectually or spiritually, I’m interested in making people feel something. At the end of an hour, you’ve had an emotional journey.”

So, not dumbed down, but not going too far with the complexity either. “The art of it is not to confuse the audience, because confusion is a killer,” added Reilly.

Touch is a 13-episode show in its current state.

Is it a problem or a benefit that Touch is 13 episodes in its current state? “The Fall lineup is a complicated one; you line up at the starting line, everybody beats each other up for a few weeks, and one is left standing,” said Kring, noting that Touch launches in Spring 2012 instead.

Was Sutherland always in mind for the hero’s role in Touch? “It was a list of one,” said Reilly. “The conversation with Tim was very short and we really had to figure out what Plan B was if he said no!”

Sutherland is also executive producer of Touch, and said he’ll be getting involved with the music side of the show – which will also get fans involved online in some way, helping to choose the music. “There’s a whole other idea to break international music through the show,” added Reilly.

Finally: 24, the movie. Is it happening? “We’re very close. We’ve worked very hard and long for the last two years on a screenplay. It was actually much more difficult to take this idea that was 24 that had 24 hours and 24 episodes to tell a story, to condense that into two hours. We thought it was going to be easier, but it was much more difficult… Hopefully we’re looking at end of April to start production. Again, we’ll see.”

The actor talked to buyers in Cannes about his return to television in the Tim Kring-produced "Touch," where he will also serve as executive producer.

Speaking at MIPCOM at the international launch of his new Tim Kring/Fox sci-fi drama Touch, Kiefer Sutherland revealed that screenwriterBilly Ray has all but completed the 24script.

But the process of condensing the storyline into a movie format was more complex than anyone originally thought.

“We have worked very long and hard over the past two years on a screenplay but it was actually much harder to take this idea that was told in 24 hours and condense it into a two-hour movie,” he said.

Sutherland was in Cannes with Kring and Fox Entertainment Group president Kevin Reilly to talk about his return to television in Touch, the midseason Fox drama about a father whose autistic son seems to be able to predict the future.

Drawing on the ideas of quantum entanglement and the interconnectivity of matter and consciousness at the quantum and human levels, Kring’s follow-up to Heroes is not shy of addressing enormous themes.

Viewers will get a window on such mathematical concepts as the golden ratio, the Fibonacci sequences and the recurrent patterns of the Mandelbrot numbers found so frequently in nature - all wrapped around a father/son tale of alienation and reconnection.

Sutherland said he had been “blown away” by the concept after being urged to look at the script by Peter Cherninand Reilly.

“After 24 I didn’t expect to be back to television quite as quickly as I have. It was an incredible experience and I really wanted some time to digest it and there was more to digest than I thought. There were films I wanted to do” Sutherland said, but once he read the story, he couldn’t let it go.
“I got to about page twenty five and I remember I put it down and just said ‘shit’ there’s no way around it, I have to do it.”

The story of a father who can’t touch or reach his autistic son but desperately wants to find a way to communicate with him gave him range to play a whole set of emotions that he had never expressed in his near-decade long performance as Jack Bauer.

“When I talked to Tim [Kring] about what he wanted to accomplish he said he wanted it to be about the emotion. My job in 24 was to keep all the emotion back, so for me to hear that as an actor was such an open door for me.”

Just as in Heroes, Kring is on a mission to push boundaries in Touch -- both in its intellectual, scientific and spiritual themes – and also in the way that the story is told in four countries. Actors in Ireland, Iraq and Japan tell different aspects of the story, keeping foreign-language dialog where relevant among the actors.

“I have had one theme in my writing for the last decade, that we live in a truly interconnected universe that I just keep going back to,” said Kring. “I wanted to elevate that this time. This is an entertainment show, but I also feel that I am at a certain point in my career when I want to make sure I am using whatever I have to put a message out that I believe in.”

Sutherland is also passionate about the theme of not underselling to audiences and challenging them.

“There is something that really does bind us together and I think it is an unbelievably positive message, and the fact that you can use something that is a really interesting theoretical science to send that message out is really powerful.”

And Sutherland isn’t not worried that the message will go over viewers’ heads.

“In America we have this terrible habit of underestimating the audience. If you actually give an audience the best you’ve got and you don’t underestimate them, the return is unbelievable.”
